Everyone knows that shopping locally is good for your community. During this holiday season, I’d like to share a few reasons why it is so important to try to spend as much of your holiday dollars in the area as possible. PROTECT LOCAL CHARACTER AND PROSPERITY: By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain our community’s diversity and distinctive flavor. Think of our artisans, gift and antique shops and local Farmers Market. KEEPING DOLLARS IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY: Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development. Jobs created by locally owned businesses, in some cases provide better wages and benefits than major chains do and allow people to work in their community COMMUNITY WELL-BEING: Locally owned businesses build stronger neighborhoods by sustaining communities and by contributing more to local causes. Entrepreneurship fuels economic innovation and prosperity. There is also the added benefit of “pride of ownership”. Our Community Waterfront Park, Hubbards Barn & Farmers Market, Community Skate Park, Hooked Rug Museum and other projects too numerous to mention are a testament to this. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers, which in turn are essential to reducing our carbon footprint. Also, shopping here is a lot less stressful than the long, dreaded trips to the business parks and box stores, not to mention the savings on fuel costs. PRODUCT DIVERSITY: A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based on their own interests and the needs of their local customers guarantees a much more unique range of product choices. A marketplace of small businesses is a great way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. There is something to be said about that unique, perfect gift purchased at a local shop as opposed to the generic, big box-store item.
